On April Fools’ Day, Cloudflare, the leading Internet performance and security company, launches its own customer DNS service, 188.8.131.52, focused on the principle of privacy-first.
DNS (Domain Name Servers) services are usually provided by internet service providers to resolve a domain name like google.com or androidnigeria.com.ng into a real IP address that a computer understands. Almost nothing happens on the Internet without a DNS request happening first. DNS services provided by ISPs (Internet Service Providers) are slow and insecure which often leads to privacy issues such sale of users’ activity data and targeted ads.
Matthew Prince, the CEO and co-founder of Cloudflare said,
“We think it’s creepy that user data is sold to advertisers and used to target consumers without their knowledge or consent. Frankly, we don’t want to know what people do on the Internet—it’s none of our business—and we’ve designed 184.108.40.206 to ensure that we, along with ISPs around the world, can’t.”
Cloudflare is using https://220.127.116.11 as the DNS service’s official website. Cloudflare claims it is faster than both Google DNS and OpenDNS. Cloudflare’s DNS uses 18.104.22.168 and 22.214.171.124 for IPv4
connections (or 2606:4700:4700::1111 and 2606:4700:4700::1001 for IPv6). The official website contains instructions on setting it up on Android. This service boasts on speed and unrivalled security with a promise to destroy all data logs of DNS queries within 24 hours.
“Many people had entered them into various random systems that APNIC were continuously overwhelmed by a flood of garbage traffic. We talked to the APNIC team about how we wanted to create a privacy-first, extremely fast DNS system. We offered Cloudflare’s network to receive and study the garbage traffic in exchange for being able to offer a DNS resolver on the memorable IPs. And, with that, 126.96.36.199 was born.”
Cloudflare’s service offer supports for both DNS-over-TLS and DNS-over-HTTPS, so it should be as secure as possible. The service uses query minimization, distributed caches, and aggressive negative answers to enhance security and performance. Also it currently has a global response time of 14ms, compared to 20ms for OpenDNS and 34ms for Google’s DNS making it the fastest DNS resolver for consumers. The company claims is paying KPMG to annually audit the company’s systems to back up its promise of deleting users’ data logs within 24 hours.
