Fine saga continuum: MTN hires former US arttorney

The case between the MTN Nigeria and Nigerian Communication Commission has just taken another twist. As Africa’s largest telecommunication service provider is reported to have enlisted the services of a former US attorney, Eric Holder, to represent the company in court.

MTN was fined an initial $5.2 billion fine, which was later cut down to 3.9 billion dollars, the fine was awarded MTN; for failing disconnect unregistered sim cards.  The telecommunications giant sought giant has sought the aid of the law to overturn the fine, by challenging the legal authority of Nigeria’s regulator to impose the fine.

Some weeks back, we reported that the court had postponed the case to March 18, in hopes that an out-of court settlement will be reached by both parties. Judging by the turn of events, it seems the idea of an out of court settlement, failed to yield any positive result. This has led to MTN hiring a renowned US lawyer.
