At the beginning of the year, we made a report on speculations that Samsung is set to release a foldable smartphone at the end of the year or early next year. Prototypes of the said foldable smartphone surfaced on the net and the news made rounds until it died off. Although we have all heard of smartphone companies having a flexible phone in the works we have never seen any prototype put on display. The major mainstream device that can be said to be near flexible or suggest flexibility is LG’s LG G 3, which is a curved phone in actual sense. Well, our wait for a groundbreaking device seems to be over as the Queen’s University Human Media Lab, Canada has announced a HoloFlex; a holographic, flexible smartphone prototype developed by the Canadian university lab.
The HoloFlex smartphone packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC coupled with 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 430 graphics chip. The smartphone runs Android 5 .1 Lollipop and has a flexible control technology, in that the device can be operated to perform certain functions when the body is bent. HoloFlex allows people to interact with what is on screen, a user can use the bending technology of the device to play Angry birds as demonstrated by the video released by Human Media Lab.
HoloFlex boasts of a holographic display capable of rendering 3D objects. It features a resolution of 1920 x 1080, however, images are rendered into 12-pixel-wide circular blocks reproducing “the full view of a 3D object from a particular viewpoint”. The pixel blocks project the image to an array of 16,000 3D printed flexible, fisheye microlenses, resulting in 160 x 104 resolution 3D/holographic images which can be viewed from any angle by rotating the phone – Androidheadlines.
The HoloFlex will be properly unveiled properly 9 May in San Jose, California. That said, the chances of seeing a mainstream flexible device or foldable smartphone have tripled, so do not be surprised if Samsung or LG or any OEM with guts to attempt redefining what smartphone should be, releases such a device.
