Google’s Hangouts on Air moving over to YouTube live from Google+

A reshuffle of services has seen Google move their Hangouts on Air video streaming service from Google+ to YouTube live. This reshuffle will take effect as from 12 September, which is less than a month from today.

The Q&A feature of Hangouts on Air will not be following in the move. As an alternative, Google says you can now gather questions from various social media in preparation for a Hangouts on air session. Google slides also has a Q&A feature that can be used as part of the broadcast.

After September 12, Hangouts on Air will be accessed through the live streaming events feature in the creator studio section of YouTube live. Click New live event, Select Quick; using Google Hangouts On Air, input your live stream a title, click Go live now or enter in details to schedule your event for later. Then use Hangouts to broadcast live.

That’s all there is to the new switch. For hangouts on air users it shouldn’t be too hard to adjust. For Google+ this loss might be on of the last straws that will break its back, making it not so useful to some and not so engaging to other’s. Many tech pundits are going with the idea that Google is shutting down Google+ or perhaps trying to turn it to something else by taking away it’s main attractions. Well, if any of this is true; in time we will know.
