Mid-range “bonito” Pixel phone with Snapdragon 710 is rumoured to launch in 2019

Update, June 4: A new detail about the rumoured 2019 mid-range Pixel was made known today by Roland Quandt on his Twitter page. Apparently, the codename of the Pixel phone is “bonito”, which is inline with the names Google usually give its hardware projects, as they are always named after sea life. According to Wikipedia, bonitos are “a tribe of medium-sized, ray-finned predatory fish in the family Scombridae, which means its the perfect name for a mid-range smartphone.

“As noted by @arbycalzone Google’s SDM710 device indeed does have a “fishy” codename, being called “Bonito”: which _PERFECTLY_ fits the mid-range orientation – Wikipedia says: “Bonitos are a tribe of medium-sized, ray-finned predatory fish…””

If this is, in fact, true, Google will be making references to it in its Android source code and other projects over the next months.

Original post, June 2: There was a rumour going around earlier this year that Google is working on a mid-range Pixel phone targeted at the Indian market. Apparently, this is true, as the leaker, Roland Quandt just confirmed this on his Twitter page.

Roland Quandt pointed out that the “mobile” device will run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC.

“Off to Taiwan for @computex_taipei today, but here’s a tidbit for ya: Google is working on a “mobile” device based on the Snapdragon 710 currently scheduled for launch in the 1st half of 2019. Sounds like this might be the (or one of them) upcoming mid-range Pixel phone.”

Quandt wasn’t able to give any specific information on the device. This may be due to the fact that the phone development just begun a month ago. Also, there are speculations that the device might probably be a Pixel tablet, as Google recently removed the tablet section from its Android website.

There was a rumour earlier this year about a mid-range Pixel phone coming in August, and now this new report from Quandt about a Pixel “mobile” phone coming in 2019. It is either Google has moved the launch date of the device to 2019, or the “mobile” phone Quandt was talking about is a second generation mid-range Pixel device, and the one rumoured to be released in August is a first-gen mid-range Pixel.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710 chipset was built for upper mid-range devices. The Snapdragon 710 offers improved performance, a 30 percent reduction in power consumption, and support for AI and advanced machine learning features. Overall, it offers higher performance and a wider range of features compared to 660, its predecessor. The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE is the first device to run on the 710 under the hood.
