Celebrating 8 years of flagship smartphones, Xiaomi has finally unveiled Xiaomi Mi 8. The smartphone launches with a notch which features 3D Face Unlock capabilities that is able to function efficiently in low lighting conditions.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 also has an exclusive variant called Mi 8 Explorer Edition. It has an in-display fingerprint sensor, a see-through glass rear with which you can see the insides of the device, and also features a 3D face unlock.
Xiaomi Mi 8 specs and features
The Xiaomi Mi 8 sports an increase in screen size, featuring a 6.21-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ 2248 x 1080 pixels resolution. It has a screen-to-body ratio of 88.5 percent and an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. As said earlier, the Xiaomi Mi 8 comes with a notch, but it can be hidden with the aid of a toggle. The smartphone comes running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, 6GB of RAM and an option of 128/256GB of internal storage.
A dual camera setup can be found at the back which features a 12MP duo. Both shooters have a f/1.8 + 1.4µm and f/2.4 + 1.0 µm lens respectively with OIS and dual-pixel autofocus. The cameras also come with AI capabilities for better portrait mode and 4-in-1 pixel binning for low-light shooting. According to the CEO of Xiaomi, Lei Jun, the Mi 8 camera section was rated 105 in DxOMark’s rankings. The Mi 8 itself attained an overall score of 99 points, which is above Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s and the iPhone X score of 97 points.
The front selfie camera is a single 20MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture that comes with AI-powered portrait selfies and Beautify.
The smartphone also comes with dual-frequency GPS, making it the first phone ever to feature this technology. The Mi 8 binds the traditional L1 band (found in most devices) with an L5 band (used in the aeronautical sector), making location-based services more precise and accurate.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition
There isn’t much difference between the Xiaomi Mi 8 and the Explorer Edition, expect in some sections like design and face unlock technology.According to Xiaomi, the 3D face unlock in the Mi 8 Explorer Edition is the first ever for any device. The 3D face unlock functions using infrared light, located in the notch.The 3D infrared camera has another awesome function apart from top-notch security. It can be used to track your facial expressions to create an Animoji clone.
The Mi 8 Explorer Edition also sports a see-through glass rear similar to the ones on HTC smartphones.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 is priced at 2,699 yuan for the 6GB RAM/64GB variant, 2,999 yuan for the 6GB/128GB version and the 6GB/256GB variant will be retailed at 3,299 yuan (N185,400).
The Mi 8 Explore Edition with will 8GB of RAM and 128 GB storage will be sold at CNY3,799 (N216,000).
The Mi 8 will be launched on Tuesday, June 5.
