Over the course of this year, several brands have taken to adopting the notch on their smartphones, from LG, Xiaomi to Huawei, including HMD’s Nokia which was recently rumoured to be in production for a notched smartphone. But here is a smartphone that ignored this trend and set a landmark for itself. Welcome the new Vivo Nex.
The much-awaited Vivo Nex has just be launched at an event in Shanghai, and it’s way more than we might have hoped for. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
The Vivo Nex skips the notch and sporting as little bezels as possible to achieve an amazing 91.24 percent screen-to-body ratio. The Nex features a huge 6.59-inch Super AMOLED screen with FHD+ (2316 x 1080 pixels) resolution and a tall 19.3:9 aspect ratio. This huge display has been nicknamed “Ultra FullView Display.”
This is one of the awesome and cool features of the Vivo Nex. Due to the front panel being totally taken by the display, Vivo found an innovative way to sport a front-facing camera without an upper chin bezel.
The front camera is hidden within the phone’s body and pops up from the top whenever you open the camera app – periscope-like. It also automatically lowers itself when you close the app.
This is made possible by the “micro-stepper motor” on which the 8MP sensor is mounted. According to Vivo, the motor is capable of being raised and lowered up to 50,000 times.
Third generation under-display fingerprint scanner
The Vivo Nex features a fingerprint sensor embedded within its display, a feat which is now common with the Vivo smartphones, as they have phase-out of mounted fingerprint sensors.
Vivo stated that the fingerprint in Nex is upgraded version of the Vivo X21 with 30% reduction in false recognition rate, 10% increase in unlock speed, and a larger recognition area.
Vivo took the Nex to another level with its spectacular specs that augment the phone features.
The Vivo Nex features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC paired with an 8GB of RAM and huge memory options of 128GB or 256GB. The device comes powered with a 4,000mAh and 22.5W charger for fast charging.
AI-powered dual camera
This happens to be the only feature on par with other flagship smartphones. The Vivo Nex sports a dual rear camera setup of a 12MP sensor with f/1.8 lens and a 5MP sensor with f/2.4 lens for image depth information.
Like most 2018 flagships, the camera comes with AI-powered features such as scene recognition, HDR, and photo composition. There is also the favoured portrait mode, Live photos, AI HDR, AR stickers and beauty mode.
The screen is the speaker
Vivo skipped the earpiece feature in Nex to incorporate what it called “Screen SoundCasting Technology” which uses the phone screen as a speaker, producing more quality sounds.
Funtouch OS with Jovi
The Vivo Nex will run on Android 8.1 Oreo and the AI-enhanced Funtouch OS 4.0 skin.
Also, the Nex sports its very own virtual assistant, Jovi. It comes with a dedicated side-mounted button like Samsung’s Bixby and Jovi is capable of launching apps and image identification using voice commands.
Vivo Nex price and availability
The phone will be up for pre-order by tomorrow and will be up for sale in offline stores as from June 23. It is available in black and red colour options. There is no word yet on its global launch.
The phone will be sold in China at a price of CNY 4,498 (~N252,000) for the 128GB version and CNY 4,998 (~N280,800) for the beefed-up 256GB model.
