Xiaomi Redmi Y2 announced with 6-inch HD+ display, dual rear cameras


Xiaomi unveiled Redmi Y2 at an event in New Delhi, India. The phone is launched in the Indian market as a re-branded model of the Redmi S2 which was launched last month in China.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 comes with a Snapdragon 625 chipset clocked at 2 GHz with octa-core CPU. It features a 5.99-inch 18:9 screen with HD+ 1440 x 720 pixels display. The phone comes in two memory variants similar to that of Redmi S2: 3GB RAM + 32GB of storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB of internal storage. Xiaomi Redmi Y2

The internal storage can be expanded up to 256GB through the microSD card. It also features a headphone jack and fingerprint sensor.

Xiaomi designed the Redmi Y2 mainly for selfie shooting and the VP Manu Kumar Jain focused mostly on the camera features. The front-facing selfie camera is a 16MP shooter with f/2.0 lens and 4-in-1 pixel binning. It comes with AI-supported features such as AI Portrait Mode, AI Smart Beauty, and Auto HDR (for automatic back-lit condition detection). Plus there’s face unlock technology for extra security. A LED flash for improved photography in low-light conditions also accompanies the selfie snapper. Xiaomi Redmi Y2The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 features a dual rear camera setup of a 12MP primary sensor and 5MP secondary shooter with LED flash.

The phone will run on Android Oreo out of the box with MIUI 9.5 skin, though it will be upgraded to MIUI 10 (announced at the event) later this month. The smartphone is powered by a 3,080mAh battery with a micro USB port.

The Redmi Y2 is the follow-up of the Redmi Y1 released late last year, but it won’t be coming in Lite version like the Y1.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 will be available for sale only on Amazon with a price tag of INR9,999 (N54,000) for the 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage version and INR11,999 (~N65,000) for the 3GB/32GB variant.
