YouTube was hacked and the most watched video “Despacito” was taken down



Recently, hackers took to the YouTube platform and defaced some of the most popular and viewed videos on the platform. A couple of these videos, truthfully, many of the videos affected were connected to Vevo, whose music videos from artists like Drake, Katy Perry and Shakira were defaced including “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy featuring Justin Bieber, taken down.

The thumbnail image of “Despacito” video was taken down by the hackers and replaced with an image of masked armed robbers, from one of Netflix popular series, Money Heist. “Despacito” was unavailable for viewing for over 2 hours. The titles and descriptions of these videos were also changed with tags such as #freepalestine and #fuckilluminati. Despacito was taken down, while the rest of the affected videos were still available for user viewing. Three hackers; Prosox, Kuroi’SH, Shade, and Akashi IT claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Each of these videos is being hosted on a Vevo channel of each of the artists, for example, “DrakeVevo”. Vevo is owned by Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Abu Dhabi Media and Alphabet. It is one of the largest video hosting companies in the world.

Reports coming from The Hacker News states that Kuroi’sh who is one of the hackers claimed responsibility on the @NowThis and @bbcarabicalerts Twitter accounts. Vevo issued a statement to The Verge to address this hack. The company confirmed that the situation has been handled and they are working on reinstating all affected videos and complete restore of their catalogue to full working order.
